Updated:FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga.,None — A 9-year-old girl who was pulled from the Chattahoochee River on Friday afternoon has died, Channel 2 Action News reporter Eric Philips confirmed.
A 911 caller said the girl had been on a tubing trip with her babysitter, another adult and two siblings.
The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said two adults and two children got out of the water safely.
The incident happened just before 5 p.m. between Highway 20 and Settles Bridge Park in Forsyth County.
Authorities said it appears the 9-year-old got caught in a water release from the Buford dam.
The girl was taken to Northside Hospital in Forsyth, where she later died. She was identified by authorities as Anna Vanhorn of Peachtree City.
Philips spoke with residents in a nearby cul-de-sac who said it is not surprising to hear about the tragedy because many people ignore the warning sirens for the water releases.
People are urged to check the water release schedule before entering the water below dams. For the Buford Dam water release schedule, call 770-945-1466.
