The GBI identified the victim as Caren Archer, 55, of McDonough. Archer was a family member of a Delta employee.

Investigators said Archer arrived at the Delta Technical Operations Center just after 2 p.m. Monday armed with a handgun. She sat in her car at the security gate until she was confronted by an officer, police told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said at least one officer opened fire after the woman went past a security checkpoint in her car.

"The individual did come onto airport property, into the employee parking lot with a gun. We responded and shots were fired," said Lt. Tina Daniel with Clayton County Police Department.

Police said there had been some family violence prior to the woman's arrival at the parking lot.

"This had nothing to do with Delta Airlines. Again the airport is safe, there is no reason for anyone to be concerned about their safety. Flights are going as usual," said Daniel.

Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Susan Elliot released a statement that said, "Delta is cooperating with authorities in their investigation of what appears to be a domestic situation involving a shooting that occurred near the Delta Technical Operations Center security entrance. No Delta employees were injured in this incident. As part of Delta’s Employee Assistance Program, confidential and free counseling is available for all Delta employees.”
