ATLANTA —
"I tried to grab her ... a hold of her and they were gone," said Ray Hamilton.
Lashawna Threatt, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Atlanta police investigators. Cierra Williams, 25, remained in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital on Monday.
The women fell at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday from the 10th floor of the 14th Street hotel.
Hamilton said a small group of people went up to a room as part of Threatt's 30th birthday celebration. He said when Williams and Threatt gave each other a big hug, they lost their balance.
“Before I knew it, they just leaned back and they were gone,” said Hamilton. “I didn’t have a good grip,” he said.
Police said both fell into the window, broke the window and then fell out of the window.
“The women fell from a room on the 10th floor. They fell onto a slanted sunroof adjoining the hotel. One of the women (Threatt) stayed on the sunroof. The other woman (Williams) rolled onto the ground below," said Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos.
“It is really miraculous that anyone could survive that,” onlooker Chris Cortnay said.
Hamilton said he believes the hotel windows were not up to par. Police said they are not investigating any aspect of the hotel windows.
Campos said investigators are awaiting toxicology results to see if alcohol was a factor.
"At this time, we have no reason to believe this was anything other than a tragic accident. The investigation continues," said Campos.
Hamilton said Threatt leaves behind a teenage daughter.
