CLARKE COUNTY, Ga. —

A University of Georgia student is recovering at home after being hit by a campus bus Friday morning.

Police said a university transit bus hit 19-year-old Sakura Yamazaki. She has been cited for walking into the path of a vehicle.

A witness said the bus driver tried to stop but it was too late.

“She was thrown to the sidewalk. She was in shock and seizing. We didn’t know what to do. ROTC people were here and they knew what to do so they were taking care of her and we were just diverting traffic and trying to get the police to the scene,” said witness Jessica Sanchez.

Sanchez said it appeared Yamazaki wasn’t paying attention when the accident happened.

Doctors at Athens-Regional Hospital treated Yamazaki for a head injury.

Police have not released the bus driver’s name.
