ATLANTA —
Tyler Perry went to his Facebook page to call out a recent incident where the actor/director was pulled over in the city of Atlanta.
Perry seems to imply on his Facebook page that he was racially profiled by police after making a right turn from a left lane in southwest Atlanta, but his publicist told Channel 2 on Wednesday that Perry does not believe he was pulled over because he is black.
The Atlanta Police Department is confirming that there now is an open investigation into the traffic stop.
Perry is known for his movies, TV shows and his presence in the Atlanta community.
The media mogul also owns a sprawling movie studio in southwest Atlanta on Greenbriar Parkway.
A few weeks ago, the actor said he was leaving his studios and was pulled over.
Perry said things got tense quickly. He said the officer walked over to his car asking why he made an illegal turn.
On his Facebook page, Perry wrote a long post which in part reads, "Before I could reply, he heard the second officer banging on a passenger window because it was tinted. Perry wrote that the second officer asked him, "Why do you think someone is following you? What is wrong with you?"
Perry said the cops continued to harass him until a third officer, who, like the Perry, is black, pulled over at the scene.
Perry went on to say the officers then changed their tune and apologized.
Channel 2's Ryan Young received a statement from APD which said, "The Atlanta Police Department has confirmed that two officers recently encountered Mr. Tyler Perry during a traffic stop. Mr. Perry's concerns, as recently expressed by him publicly, will be the basis for referral of the matter to the department's Office of Professional Standards. OPS has opened an investigation to determine if Mr. Perry's claims can be substantiated, and whether any departmental policies or procedures were violated during the stop."
Young's police sources told him the officers are part of a task force and were in the area looking for a stolen car like the one Perry was driving, and once he made the illegal turn, which Perry admits to making, they had cause to pull him over.
But now, what happened after the initial traffic stop is under the microscope, especially after Perry compared his encounter to racial profiling and the case of Trayvon Martin.
