Two Held in Elderly Man's Slaying

Victim's Killing Spurred Pleas for Help from Relatives

LAWRENCEVILLE —

Gwinnett County police said Friday that they have arrested two men in connection with the home invasion and attempted robbery last weekend in which an elderly man was shot and killed.

The suspects, identified as David Botto, 35, and Alan Smith, 29, have been charged with murder in the death of Hubert Massey, 85. Police detailed the case during an afternoon news conference.

According to the Web site of the Gwinnett sheriff, Botto, in addition to the murder charge, has been charged with burglary and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Smith was also charged with burglary in addition to the murder charge, according to online records.

Massey, who was partially blind, was fatally wounded when an intruder broke into his home, located in the 300 block of Windsor Farms Road, shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, and shot the man in his abdomen and arm.

The man was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the man returned fire from his own weapon but the assailants managed to escape. Massey's 84-year-old wife, Geneva, who was at home during the incident, was not hurt.

The killing sparked a public outcry from Massey's relatives, who pleaded with members of the public to provide clues.

The funeral for Massey, a World War II veteran, who is also survived by three daughters and several grandchildren, was held Wednesday.
