Two Gwinnett County Police Officers Shot Serving Warrant

The suspect in the Gwinnett County standoff that began Thursday night is dead.

William Shable Caram, 37, was found dead in the home at 5534 White Cedars Road in the Saddlebrook subdivision in Sugar Hill.

Police entered the home and found Caram about 10:45 a.m., according to Gwinnett Police Cpl. Illana Spellman. She said authorities were not yet sure how he died.

The incident began when Caram shot and wounded two Gwinnett County police officers trying to arrest him on a felony warrant. He then barricaded himself in his home and held off police for almost 12 hours.

Officials told Channel 2 Caram was being arrested because he tried to run over a police officer Saturday night during a roadside check in Suwanee. Officers said Caram confronted officers while fleeing the checkpoint.

Sergeant Michael P. McKeithan was shot in the back, abdomen, shoulder and arm and is in the Intensive Care Unit at Gwinnett Medical Center after undergoing surgery. He is a twenty-two year veteran of the department and has served on numerous specialized units during his tenure.

The second officer is Corporal William M. Hoch. He was shot in the leg and is in stable condition. He is a seven year veteran with the police department, but has also had previous law enforcement experience in Pennsylvania before moving to Georgia several years ago.

According to dispatchers, officers pulling up to the location pulled the injured officers to safety.

Classes were canceled at Riverside Elementary School on Friday because of the standoff.
