Thousands Walk for Good Causes

ATLANTA —

Thousands of North Georgians put their feet down for charity Saturday, as they took part in a variety of community efforts to raise money.

In Atlanta, more than 1,200 walkers are taking part in the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. Walkers picked distances of ten to thirty miles to walk in this 5th annual event. Organizers say they've so far raised more than $2.6million, helping fund grants for a variety of cancer programs. The walkers also got encouragement from First Lady Mary Perdue, who hosted a noontime reception for them at the Governor's Mansion. The 2-day Walk for Breast Cancer wraps up Sunday morning with closing ceremonies downtown at Centennial Olympic Park.

Other walkers were also wearing out leather for other good causes Saturday. In Cobb County, participants in the 5K Atlanta Asthma Walk and 1K Kids Fun Run raised money for American Lung Association's asthma research and education programs. And, in Gwinnett County, walkers and runners took part in Vee's annual 5K Charity Walk/Run, which, this year, is raising money for domestic abuse victims at the Atlanta Union Mission Women's Shelter.
