Suspicious burglary targets OB/GYN society

SUWANEE, Ga. —

Police are working to find the person who burglarized the office of a local nonprofit.

Workers said the theft targeted computers with private information.  Channel 2's Tony Thomas spoke with victims, who raised concerns about the timing of the crime.

"Whoever did this, they knew what they were doing and was able to do it very quickly," Georgia OB/GYN Society Executive Director Pat Cota said.

She said the break-in happened in the middle of the day, just after noon on Saturday.  The Gwinnett-based society is the professional organization for OB/GYN doctors statewide.

Two laptops computers, one of which was docked at her desk, was missing from Cota's office.  She said they contain all of the professional and family information for some 1,000 OB/GYNS.

With the alarm beeping, the burglar apparently passed by two other offices for hers.

Cota said she is not sure why she was targeted.

But the timing comes as the nonprofit lobby's state lawmakers on some controversial bills.  The group is against two anti-abortion bills they believe will criminalize physicians caring for women.  It's also pushing a bill that would exempt doctors from the open records law.

Gwinnett police confirm they got a call regarding the incident Saturday, but couldn't provide further details over the weekend.
