Teens charged with snatching laptops from coffee shop patrons

ATLANTA —

A quick-moving coffee house employee chased down two teenagers suspected of snatching laptops from local coffee shops Tuesday night.

Channel 2 was there as officers took pictures of one suspect and dusted a stolen car for fingerprints.

Duane Burns was at the Starbucks on Moreland Avenue Tuesday night working on his iPad when he heard a scream.

“All of a sudden the barista was around the corner bolting through the front door. Chased the dude out into the parking lot,” Burns said.

The coffee shop was on alert, with a sign posted on the door warning of laptop snatchings, because the same thing happened there on Monday.

“I saw him grabbing the guy’s car door, kicking the car. As it’s pulling out, he’s still kicking the door and then I realize someone’s laptop had been stolen,” Burns said.

Police arrested two teenagers a few miles away from the scene of the theft on Tuesday night. Police said they were running away from a stolen car.

Officers found a laptop and an iPad when they arrested the teens. They are charged with snatching three laptops from coffee shops this week.

“Those are three I’m aware of, but I’m suspecting that there are more,” Capt. Michael Giugliana of the Atlanta Police Department said.

Giugliana said detectives will now put together a lineup and bring in the victims to identify the thieves.
