Teacher Says She Was Fired Because Of Hairstyle

A Marietta teacher says she was fired over her hairstyle and now she wants to file a lawsuit against the school.

Claire Anderson says she was fired from her teaching job at Covenant Christian Ministries Academy – a private school where Anderson taught third grade until she says her hair became a problem for the pastor and superintendent – who are husband and wife.

“She basically asked me to put weave in it to cover it,” said Anderson. “I asked her if there was anything wrong with my performance – she said that my hairstyle does not fit the image of the school.”

Anderson says when she applied for the teaching job her hair was like it is now, just shorter. In October, she began to wear it naturally – shortly after, she was told to change it.

“I combed it out into a full afro. That day there was no conversation – I was pulled into the office and told I no longer work here,” said Anderson.

Anderson says she was shocked and stunned by all of it and at first only wanted an apology from the school -- but now she is considering a lawsuit.

Channel 2 tried to contact the school for comment but we have not yet heard from them.
