Take A 155 MPH Ride In A Dragster

COMMERCE, Ga —

The National Hot Rod Association rolled into Atlanta this weekend. The Atlanta Dragway in Commerce will be hosting the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Dragsters, funny cars, and motorcycles will all be on hand to push death-defying speeds at the track.

The NHRA also offered members of the media to take a ride in a dragster. Granted you wouldn't hit over 300 miles per hour like the Top Fuel ones do, still, it would do about 155 mph.

I took them up on the offer.

VIDEO: Take A 155 mph Ride In A Dragster

Former Georgia Tech basketball star Tom Hammonds now competes in the NHRA, he joined me to serve as a coach, and to calm my nerves.

His first question to me, did you bring a diaper. That certainly had me looking forward to the ride.

After throwing on the helmet and safety equipment, they strapped me in, and it was time to roll.

I've got to tell you, I was actually shocked at how smooth the ride was. At first, the car shakes a little, but after about a second, it is as smooth as driving 45 miles per hour down a country road....granted your head is pressed up against the seat and you can't move it, but it was a memorable ride to say the least. Now I'm not sure how someone could actually drive the thing, much less switch gears during the whole process, but I guess that's why they're pros. Oh yea, they also do it at well over 300 miles per hour, we only hit 155 mph.

Don't miss the video from the event.

The Southern Nationals runs all weekend. For tickets or more info, check out their website. Atlanta Dragway
