ATLANTA —
Someone has just been buried at a family’s cemetery plot – but they have no idea who it is. Someone has even been leaving flowers at the unmarked site – now officials may have to exhume the body.
For generations members of the Midway United Methodist Church have buried loved ones at the cemetery. But now the cemetery has become the center of an investigation by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Coroner’s Office and even the GBI – all trying to find out who is buried there without a name.
“We have done some tests. There is a vault or possibly a casket there,” says Forsyth County Coroner Lauren McDonald.
McDonald says something has been buried – and without disturbing sacred ground, he is trying to find out what it is – or more importantly – who it is.
Perhaps no one wants to know out more than Elaine Lee – whose family plot was dug up to bury a stranger.
“My grandfather, grandmother, my mother, my father, my nieces, uncles, my aunts, these are my brothers and sister-in-law and my other brother – and this were supposed to be ours,” said a very emotional Lee.
Elaine’s family has kept this section set aside for her, her husband and two daughters. The graves all around the area bear the names of Elaine’s relatives – generation after generation.
As her daughters and grandchildren pay their respects to their loved ones, Elaine can’t help but feel cheated.
“Me and my kids always talked about being side by side, so we could be together just like we are now. And they wanted to be beside their granny and grandpa. We wanted to all be together right here in this plot,” said Elaine.
The Forsyth County Coroner’s Office does not want to exhume the body. They are asking anyone with information to please call them at (770) 205-3011.
