Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones was at a home Monday evening when investigators found the SUV, believed to be involved in the crash, parked in the back yard of a Clayton County home.

Detectives said they worked late into the night Monday on the case. Tuesday, investigators wanted to fingerprint a beer can found inside the SUV.

“Right now, we’re on an all-out manhunt for this guy,” said Capt. James Callaway of the Morrow Police Department.

Police said they are working around the clock to find Avelardo Franquez.

Officers credited good police work with finding the Lexus SUV they believe Franquez was driving when he left the scene after allegedly slamming into the back of a car on Jonesboro Road near South Lake Plaza on Sunday.

The collision left 7-year-old Damian Dennis in critical condition. The boy’s mother suffered minor injuries.

The SUV was found Monday night, not far from the crash scene, in the back yard of a home, police said. A neighbor told Jones that she’d never seen the man park his SUV in the back yard before.

Officers descended on the home with weapons drawn on Monday. Police questioned people who arrived at the home.

Franquez was not there.

Callaway said officer will examine the SUV on Tuesday and will be looking for any clues that may explain what caused the SUV to slam into the back of the car.

“We’re (going to) be looking for any blood evidence, fingerprint evidence. There’s a beer can in the back seat that we’re (going to) fingerprint as well,” said Callaway.

Dennis is now in stable condition.

Police said they believe Franquez is getting help from family members and is now riding in a silver or black 2004 Chevrolet Silverado with a Georgia tag 7490 ATD.
