DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says disease outbreaks linked to imported foods are on the increase.

The report shows fish is implicated in about 45 percent of cases.

DeKalb County fish processor Inland Seafood said it uses a multistep control system to ensure a safe product.

They allowed a Channel 2 camera to watch as a staff member took samples of a 125-pound tuna from Sri Lanka for visual inspection.

"We will also test at least 10 percent [of] the fish for histamine levels and bacteria levels," Chief Operating Officer Bill Demmond said.

The company laboratory just won the highest level of certification available.

"There's a lot of Chinese and Pacific Rim people shipping [fish] to the United States, trying to fill a need for product," Demmond said. "They need to clean up their act."

"About three-quarters of the fish outbreaks were from Asian fish," said CDC epidemiologist Dr. Hannah Gould, author of the study.

Demmond said more federal testing is going on to keep tainted fish off the market, but he likes the company to test again to make sure nothing went wrong in shipping.
