Earlier this week, Channel 2 Action News filed an open records request for Fulton County Jail incidents involving contraband over the past year and a half.

Channel 2 producers went through hundreds of records describing numerous contraband items seized inside the jail from inmates.

The items range from cigarettes and cellphones to 11-inch screwdrivers and a gun.

For the first half of 2011, Fulton County Jail records show contraband incidents including:

21 cellphones;

9 weapons;

8 incident of pills (like prescription drugs); and

And 11 incidents in which drugs were found.

Records indicated that the contraband came into the jail from many different sources. On the initial reports, one inmate said he received a lighter and cigarettes from an officer. Another said he brought a cellphone with him when he was transferred from a state prison. In another report, an inmate was accused of taking prescription drugs from a nurse's cart.

Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson asked the FBI for help with corruption issues last summer. He said, "The majority of employees at the Sheriff’s Office are dedicated, hardworking and honest people. The small percentage who disgraced the Sheriff’s Office are conflicted about which side of the bars they belong."
