Publix Closing Westside Village Store

ATLANTA —

Seven years ago, city leaders hailed the opening of the Publix grocery store in Historic Westside Village as the spark needed to revitalize that area of town.

While steps were taken in that direction, the revitalization never quite materialized, and now Publix says it will shut down that store at 7:00 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Publix spokesperson Brenda Reid told Channel 2 Action News that the store just wasn't making its sales goals and said the proposed development around it in Historic Westside Village never materialized. Both those factors led to the decision to close the store down.

Atlanta City Council Member Ivory Young plans a series of town hall meetings to discuss the closure and its impact on the surrounding neighborhoods.
