Postal Worker Accused Of Stealing Credit, Gift Cards From Customers

COBB COUNTY, Ga. —

Smyrna police arrested a longtime postal deliveryman for allegedly stealing customer’s mail. Police said the 49-year-old carrier was intercepting credit cards and gift cards that were destined for customers along his route.

Akisha Howard said she marched right back into the Smyrna Post Office after finding a letter from a bank had been pried open.

"My mail had been tampered with and had been opened and everything," said Howard.

Howard said it had happened to her three times in the past three months and she was furious.

She said she was also not surprised to find out that just hours earlier, Smyrna police had arrested a veteran postman, 49-year-old Jeff K. Jones, for allegedly pilfering from the U.S. mail.

“Based upon information from the investigators, he had been taking both credit cards and gift cards out of the mail and using them for his own use," said Michael Smith with the Smyrna Police Department.

Police went through Jones' car and found two credit cards, 45 gift cards and tax and social security statements containing personal information, police said.

Police believe some of the items were taken from bins inside the post office and others were taken from customers along Jones' routes.

One of Jones' customers noticed a card he had been expecting in the mail had already been used and he contacted police.

Howard said she’s already given postal workers a piece of her mind. “And I’m like, 'I know y'all have some dishonest workers or something. This is the third time this has happened to me,'" said Howard.

Police said they suspect there may be dozens of victims. Jones is facing charges including theft by taking and credit card and ID theft.
