GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —
Channel 2 Action News has learned that Bryson Bryant, 20, was taken into custody on March 7 while visiting an inmate at the Gwinnett County Jail.
Authorities told Channel 2 that Bryant had marijuana in his possession while visiting the inmate.
Deputies said they made the discovery during Bryant's arrest at the jail following a warrant check. Authorities said it is common practice to conduct a warrant check on people visiting inmates.
While undergoing a warrant check, authorities said a hit came back stating that Bryant failed to appear in court for a traffic citation.
According to an incident report obtained by Channel 2, authorities found a small bag containing a green leafy substance inside Bryant's jacket while taking him into custody. A test confirmed that the substance was in fact marijuana, the report stated.
Bryant was charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and failure to appear, according to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.
He was released from jail Wednesday after posting bond.
REACT TO HIS ARREST: On Facebook
In a statement through her publicist, Leakes told wsbtv.com that "like any parent, I am disappointed with the actions and arrest of my son, Bryson. Certainly, my husband and I will deal with this family issue in a private manner."
According to her Twitter page, Leakes is in New York City on business and to sign copies of her book “Never Make the Same Mistake Twice”
"My son is not the first young adult to experiment with marijuana, and he certainly won't be the last. Still, as parents, this is a chance for us to have an open dialogue with him about the dangers of any substance abuse. I realize as a parent that my job is never done. And as I’ve tweeted, tough love was in order. Still, I ask that you respect our privacy during this trying time," Leakes said.
