Police: Man Hid Gun In Baby's Diaper Bag

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —

DeKalb County police said Monday a Stone Mountain man tried to smuggle a loaded gun into a metro Atlanta courthouse by hiding it in a diaper bag.

The man is out on bond. He and his girlfriend said they didn't know the gun was there.

"It was loaded and it was in a diaper bag," DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown told Channel 2 Action News reporter Mark Winne. "Employees are trained to react a certain way and they did that."

Inside one diaper bag Friday at the DeKalb County Courthouse security checkpoint, deputies said some bottles contained formula and a 9 mm pistol contained bullets.

"The technician saw the weapon come through the X-ray machine, called for the deputy who came over and confirmed that that's in fact what it was," said Brown.

"I reached inside the X-ray machine after it was shut off, pulled the bag out and asked the public whose bag this was. The gentleman, he identified that it was his," said Deputy John Feltz with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.

A report indicated Steven Richardson, 29, of Stone Mountain was arrested.

Deputy Ann Marie Ramey said the woman with the baby echoed Richardson's claim that they had retrieved the baby and the bag from a relative's home that morning and they didn't know about the gun.

"He did say that was his baby bag so they came in together, she held the child and he claimed the bag, so therefore he was the one arrested," said Ramey.

Richardson was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a weapon at a public gathering, carrying a pistol without a permit, and theft by receiving stolen property.

Channel 2 Action News attempted to contact Richardson but was unable to do so.
