Officials said a man robbed the Wachovia Bank on Shorter Avenue in Rome on Thursday morning.

Authorities said they received a description of the robber’s car from a witness.

Police spotted the car and attempted to pull the driver over, but police said the man fled.

Officers chased the driver until he pulled off into the Village Shopping Center near the Steak n’ Shake on Turner McCall Boulevard.

As police closed in, the man shot and killed himself, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they recovered evidence from the vehicle, including money stolen from the bank.

No one at the bank was injured.

The man’s name has not been released.

Police continue to investigate.
