NEWARK, N.J. —
A Shuttle America flight from Atlanta declared an emergency while landing at Newark Airport.
The FAA said Shuttle America flight 5124 was landing just before 6:30 p.m. Monday when the pilot declared an emergency because of a problem with the landing gear.
The FAA said the plane's nose gear collapsed on impact.
Officials said heavy smoke came from the plane as it came to rest, but the plane was never on fire.
All the passengers were evacuated from the plane using emergency chutes. No one was injured in the incident.
73 people were onboard the plane at the time.
Newark airport was shut down for a short time while crews attended to the plane. It has since started up operations but one of the runways will remain closed for the night while investigators attend to the plane.
