ATLANTA —

A Clayton County police officer who was seriously injured in a crash Monday worries about the health of
his K-9 patrol partner Lakota. The 5-year-old German Shepherd suffered extensive broken bones when the officer's patrol car wrecked in route to a home invasion robbery.

"He's very concerned. Honestly he's more concerned about his dog's recovery than his own. But that's his partner," Corey Fox, the officer's wife, said.

Corey Fox spoke with Channel 2's Tom Regan outside of Atlanta Medical Center where her husband is recovering from a range of unspecified injuries.

"He's in good spirits. He's getting better every day," Fox said.

She said Lakota is receiving care at an emergency veterinary clinic at the University of Georgia. Fox said the dog's rear legs were broken and it has many other injuries.

Following the crash, Fox said her husband voluntarily retired Lakota and took ownership of the dog.

She said they will be responsible for the animal's medical care, which could run into the thousands of dollars, including surgery and recovery.

"He's also going to need extra care at home. A ramp is going to have to be built for him, possibly a special orthopedic bed and a canine wheel chair," Fox said.

Fox said she would appreciate any donations for Lakota's medical care.
