ATLANTA —
Occupy Atlanta protesters were given a chance to leave Woodruff Park peacefully late Monday night after spending four days camped out in the park, but the next morning, the movement was standing firm.
Members of Atlanta’s branch of the Occupy Wall Street movement started setting up camp in the park Friday. Protesters have a range of grievances, including unemployment and bank bailouts.
Late Monday night, a representative from Mayor Kasim Reed’s office made a statement to the media saying they were giving the protesters a chance to leave the park, but would not reveal what would happen to the protesters if they refused to go.
"We're allowing the protesters the opportunity to leave the park peacefully," said Candace Byrd, Mayor Kasim Reed's chief of staff.
Earlier in the evening, a representative from Atlanta’s Park and Recreation Department handed out copies of the city’s operating procedures for the city’s parks which says city parks close to the public at 11 p.m.
The Atlanta Police Department was in the area throughout the night, but so far there have been no reports of any arrests.
Protestors said they are watching for the police and will stay as long as necessary.
“I don’t want the police state to continue to do this to us for no reason,” Misty Novitch said.
