ATLANTA —
Atlanta police said a preliminary investigation revealed that at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday a driver from Rome, Ga., was traveling in the HOV lane of I-75 northbound near Northside Drive when he discovered he had a flat tire on his Ford van.
According to witnesses, the driver of the van stopped his vehicle in the HOV lane with his hazard lights on.
Moments later, a man from Atlanta on his BMW R-1250 motorcycle in the HOV lane struck the back of the stopped van, police said.
The motorcyclist was ejected from the motorcycle. He was transported by Grady EMS in serious condition and was later pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Police said the gas tank of the motorcycle ruptured during the collision, which caught the motorcycle and van on fire.
The van driver was not hurt.
Police are not releasing the names of those involved until next of kin have been notified.
Charges are pending further investigation, police said.
