As a beaten student recovers from surgery, his outraged mother is speaking out about the vicious beating her son suffered during his school day.

The attack happened Monday at Westlake High School in south Fulton County, when four students entered a classroom and started attacking the victim without warning.

Channel 2's Ryan Young talked with the victim's mother outside her son's hospital room.

"He's got a broken nose, metal plate in his jaw. Teeth are wired shut. Can't eat, can't talk, can't move his mouth," the boy's mother, Meredith, said.

The heartbroken mother told Young the injuries her son suffered, and the surgery he's had after four students entered his class at school and attacked him.

"You send your child to school to learn. He in a classroom doing what he is supposed to do, not involved in a gang. Next thing you know he's being assaulted and nobody is helping him, staff is running out," Meredith said.

Fulton County School police now have video of the attack.

A substitute was in the class and school officials said she left to get help. The attackers have been identified as three ninth graders and one 10th grader with a troubled past.

But Meredith said the attack continued for several minutes before it was stopped.

"At the time, I didn't know he had been there for 40 minutes with no medical treatment," Meredith said. "When you send your child to school you don't expect to pick up and take him to hospital for surgery."

Fulton County School police plan to charge the attackers with simple battery gang activity and disruption of a public school. They said at least one of the attackers will be charged with aggravated battery.
