LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. —

A Lawrenceville city worker who was critically injured when a giant limb crashed onto his truck roof is back home facing a long road to recovery.

Otis Johnson, 33, suffered broken bones in his neck, had head injuries and multiple facial fractures when the tree limb struck his truck while he was driving along Stone Mountain Street during a thunderstorm Dec. 12.

He apparently was knocked unconscious and his truck veered into two other vehicles.

"He woke up in the middle of the hospital. He doesn't remember the tree hitting his truck. He's in a lot of pain. His face was pretty much shattered. He has a plate in his forehead. He has five titanium plates in his face," said wife Mandy Johnson.

She told Channel 2's Tom Regan it was days before she could look at pictures of the wrecked truck. She wished to thank the doctors, paramedics and a neighbor who rushed to the scene.

"He jumped in the truck with Otis right away and kept him awake, alert and kept him still," Mandy Johnson said.

She said her husband remains blind in one eye, but she is hopeful he will make a full recovery in six months.

A fund has been set up to help the Johnson’s pay their medical expenses.

You can make a donation to the Otis Johnson Donation Fund at any Brand Bank location.
