NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. —
A 12-year-old Covington girl was hit and killed while walking on a highway.
It happened around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 81 and Oak Hill Road in Newton County.
A woman who lives on Highway 81 said she heard the commotion and ran outside to find her street flooded with deputies from the county Sheriff's Office.
“The boots are laying at the end of my driveway,” Ivey told Channel 2’s Rachel Stockman.
GSP troopers said the driver, a woman in a black Toyota Camry, immediately stopped when she realized what happened and has been cooperating with investigators. They said they’re confirming with the Newton County Coroner before releasing the victim's identity.
The road was closed for about three hours while authorities investigated.
So far, no charges have been filed against the driver.
