FULTON COUNTY, Ga. —

Police are investigating after a pickup truck hit and killed a pedestrian Monday night in south Fulton County.

The driver hit the woman on Old National Highway near Jolly Road.

The driver told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri he was driving northbound when a woman suddenly walked out in front of his truck.

He said it's the second time police were on that stretch of road Monday.

Just after midnight a hit-and-run driver hit another woman about a hundred yards from where Monday night's incident happened.

"I'm just sorry it happened to her. She just darted in front of the car nothing nobody could do," the driver told Viteri, asking not to be identified.

The driver said he hit a woman with his Chevy pickup. The man said the middle-aged woman suddenly crossed in front of him.

"She just was there. She just appeared there. Wasn't nothing nobody could do. Couldn't stop. Didn't even have time to hit the brakes," the driver said.

He told Viteri heavy traffic was in both directions when he struck her as she crossed to the west side of the highway at jolly road.

"It was like a flash for me. The people, the witnesses said she just darted out into the traffic," the driver said.

It's the second pedestrian accident on Old National Highway in less than 24 hours.

A Channel 2 Action News camera captured the scene just after midnight Monday when police said a hit-and-run driver struck a middle-aged woman as she crossed Old National Highway in front of the Baby Grand piano bar. Crews took the woman to Grady Memorial Hospital.

"I think they should put some walks out here, too many people getting run over on this street," said taxi driver Brian Howell

Howell said he's always slowing down for people trying to cross the five lane highway.

"People, they don't watch where they're going. That's why they need to put a cross walk out here," Howell said.

"I really don't even know where they would cross if they were coming across the street. They put some walks out here. This is a bad area," the other driver said.

Police said witnesses described a silver or dark gray Honda car in the overnight hit-and-run. They are still looking for that driver.

Police said they do not expect to charge the driver in Monday night's accident. They are not releasing the woman's name until they've talked with her family.
