GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —

A woman who was seen hanging on to the hood of a car traveling down Interstate 85 didn’t think she would survive the ordeal.

"When I was on top of the car, all I was thinking is that I didn't want to die," Leidy Amu told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh was invited to speak with the 19-year-old at the studios for Atlanta’s 96.5 La Mega. Amu described the horrifying moments she spent on the hood of the SUV as it raced down the interstate.

Police said Amu’s boyfriend, Jonathan Salas, was going as fast as 80 mph as she was clinging to the hood Tuesday afternoon.

"And I was begging him, and I was praying to God to not let me fall off that car," Amu said.

As Kavanaugh reported Thursday, several concerned drivers spotted the SUV and heard Amu screaming for help.

"I thought they were shooting a movie. I was like, 'This just can't be real,'" Blake Wilbanks said.

He said he and several other drivers paced the jeep, eventually boxing it in, leading the driver to the exit ramp.

"I am really thankful that they helped me. If it wasn’t for them, I would be dead," Amu said.

She said she and Salas were arguing at his apartment. He needed to leave, but she didn't want him go, so she hopped on the hood to stop him.

She said her boyfriend, who was arrested on aggravated assault charges, isn’t a bad person and that she had a chance to get off the hood before the vehicle reached the interstate.

“I was the one who provoked him,” Amu said.

She said Salas first drove around several side streets and stopped, but she didn’t get off.

Amu’s mother told Kavanaugh in Spanish that she has expressed to her daughter several times her concern over her relationship with Salas, but Amu continues to defend her boyfriend in Tuesday’s incident.

“We all make mistakes,” Amu said.
