Villa Rica bans driving and talking on cellphone

VILLA RICA, Ga. —

Villa Rica has banned driving and talking on a cellphone without a hands-free device.

The Carroll County city passed the ordinance Tuesday, making it the first city in the state to pass such a law. But the mayor told Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston he may put a stop to it before officers can write the first ticket.

Councilman Woody Holland came up with the idea.

"I got no negative feedback from the constituents," he told Huddleston.

Huddleston didn't get any negative feedback either.

“It's very distracting when you have a phone to your ear and you're only driving with one hand, so yeah, I'd go for it,” Villa Rica resident Brett Hall said.

Police Chief Michael Mansour said he's already getting the word out.

"The violation for it is $75. It's a city ordinance, so it doesn't count on your driver's license or insurance or anything like that," Mansour said.

Mayor Jay Collins didn’t want to appear on camera but told Huddleston he may veto the ordinance. He said he’s concerned about having the only city with such a ban.

The mayor has 10 days to make a decision. Holland said if it is vetoed, he'll bring it up again at the June city council meeting.

"There's nothing more important to me than driving when you're doing it. Whether it’s fiddling with the radio or combing your hair, you ought to be driving the car," he said.
