Thieves break into 22 cars in Grant Park apartment complex

By Amy Napier Viteri

ATLANTA —

Neighbors in a local apartment complex were concerned for their security after a string of car break-ins in their gated parking lot.

People living at the Roosevelt Apartments on Hansell Street in the Grant Park neighborhood said they found a shocking amount of broken glass and damaged vehicles throughout the lot.

Atlanta Police told Channel 2 Action News they had a total of 22 cars that were broken into in one night.

"Thousands of dollars of merchandise was removed," victim Joseph Lenton told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri.

Lenton said thieves broke into two of his vehicles. They pried open the door to the truck he uses for work and also stole the hairstyling tools he distributes for a living. He was worried about another unusual item thieves took from several cars.

"They went totally through the whole vehicle and for some strange reason they're stealing our registrations," Lenton said.

Neighbors sent us pictures of the damage thieves did to a convertible top which was slashed open with scissors.

Joe Earls said thieves also ransacked his car. They didn't do any damage because he said he no longer locks his doors after prior break-ins.

"I leave it unlocked because I have nothing of value in the car," Earls explained. "It'd be more expensive for me to replace the window that's busted out."

"I personally do not feel safe," Masha Myrie told Viteri. She said she would like to see more security at the complex, which is at the end of a secluded street.

Neighbors said they talked with complex management about adding lighting to the parking lot and additional cameras.
