Slain woman found behind Jonesboro complex

By Eric Philips

JONESBORO, Ga. —

Someone discovered a body behind a Clayton County apartment complex Wednesday night.

A resident at the Harmony Crossroads apartments in Jonesboro noticed the body in a wooded area and called police. It was covered by some sort of sheet or blanket that caught the resident’s eye.

"Effective immediately, [we’re] working an active homicide," said Jonesboro Police Chief Franklin Allen.

Allen said the victim is a black woman around 25 to 30 years old with injuries on her body, but he would not elaborate on the injuries.

"We're in the process of canvassing the area," Allen told Channel 2 Action News reporter Eric Philips.

Resident Felecia Clyburn said she normally walks around the complex and was surprised by the discovery.

"I walk my dog all over and never saw anything, all down in the woods and whatnot," Clyburn said.

Willie White, who works and lives on the property, said it was an unusual incident for the neighborhood.

"We have to go behind the buildings frequently every morning when we do the ground, and we didn't notice anything strange or out of line," White said.

Police plan to return to the area in search of clues that might lead to the killer.
