Residents of the Covington neighborhood where Ethan Martinez, 7, lived with his mother and her boyfriend, David Mann Jr., said they didn't even know the little boy lived there.

Florence Zacwilliams lives across the street from the boy's house.

"They moved in about a year ago, and I never saw the little boy outside or playing with the other kids in the neighborhood. They kept to themselves. I just recently met the mom, Dora, after all this time," Zacwilliams said.

Police said Mann killed Ethan. He's charged with murder, aggravated battery and cruelty to children.

Police said the boy died Sept. 18 after some form of body trauma.

At Ethan's school, Livingston Elementary, his classmates held a memorial service Thursday. They sang songs, lit a candle and planted daffodil bulbs in the school garden.

Jesus Martinez, Ethan's father, said he hadn't seen his son in more than a year.

He said he got a call telling him Ethan was in the hospital, and when he got there he saw police leading Mann away in handcuffs.

Mann is being held in the Newton County jail.
