Incumbents ousted in runoff races

ATLANTA —

Metro voters selected the last candidates for November’s general election on Tuesday in a series of runoff races across north Georgia.

Many county races appeared to be very close as results came in but in Clayton County, former sheriff Victor Hill, who is under indictment, stunned many people by pulling ahead of current Sheriff Kem Kimbrough by just a few hundred votes then claiming victory just before 11 p.m. With all but one precinct reporting, Hill has less than 1,800 votes above Kimbrough, an 8 percent margin.

"Tonight, I am humbled by God and the support of the Clayton County  voters and accept their will to serve once again, as Sheriff of Clayton  County ...  As promised, I want to advise those  who prey on others by breaking into homes, robbing businesses and drug trafficking to stop or leave Clayton while you still can. Your presence is not wanted and your lawlessness will not be tolerated.  I want to  thank everyone once again," Hill said.

Kimbrough released a statement about his loss saying, "We gave it our best shot for the last three and a half years and the people have made their decision. I respect them and always will."

Former Clayton County police chief Jeff Turner appeared to unseat current Clayton County Commission Chair Eldrin Bell. Turner has 67 percent of the vote with all but one precinct reporting.

In Cobb County, voters appeared to retain their commission chairman as nominee -- Republican Tim Lee led challenger Bill Byrne by a slim margin.

In Forsyth County, current Sheriff Ted Paxton trailed challenger Duane Piper in a race that was separated by just a few hundred votes.

Another closely watched race determined who will have the chance to win Georgia’s newest congressional seat.

Unofficial returns showed State Rep. Doug Collins won the Republican runoff election for the 9th district, beating conservative talk radio host Martha Zoller 55 percent to 45.

Collins edged Zoller by less than 1 percent of the vote in last month's primary election but failed to win a majority, triggering a runoff. He held a much larger lead Tuesday.

Collins is a favorite to defeat Democrat Jody Cooley in November because the district is heavily Republican.
