LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. —
Gwinnett County police are searching for a woman they say created a fake person to collect bogus paychecks from her company. Police told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh they believe before Summer Payne stole from the company, she failed to report thousands of dollars on state tax reports. When the company discovered what had happened, they said they fired Payne. Gwinnett County police said Payne, 37, found a way to cash in on her employer using her position and a little imagination. "It was her responsibility to do many things, including payroll and taxes," Cpl. Jake Smith with the Gwinnett County Police Department said. Police said Payne was the accountant for Peach State Roofing. According to a police report, Payne created a fake person named Pedro Perez, and used the name to collect close to $6,000 in paychecks that she deposited in her personal bank account. "We came to the company's Lawrenceville headquarters for comment. We were asked to leave before we could ask a question," Smith said. But police believe Payne created the employee out of retaliation for being fired. Police said Peach State Roofing does business in 34 states. Investigators believe Payne failed to report state tax information in several of them, including $100,000 in Georgia alone. When the company was notified of the tax issues, they said they fired Payne. "All they need is some convincing documents, Social Security numbers, names, birthdays and people can get away with stealing a lot of money," Smith said. But police said there's always a paper trail and eventually you will get caught. Payne faces a felony charge of theft by deception. Investigators ask if you have any information on this case to please contact Gwinnett County police at 770-513-5100. http://bcove.me/ccpg06zq
