Police: Taco Mac waitress skimmed customer credit cards

A local couple is under arrest in a credit card skimming operation that may have victimized dozens of restaurant customers.

Channel 2's Tom Regan spent the day at the Taco Mac restaurant in Sandy Springs, where police are still trying to determine the number of victims in this case. Police said 31-year-old server Aja Annunziata was busted for supplementing her tips by snatching the digital identity information from customers' credit cards.

'You know, in this case, she was a perfect set up, because she's working in a restaurant. She skims a card or two," Sandy Springs Police Capt. Steve Rose said. "The victim doesn't know until it just shows up on a statement. You're just spending someone else's money."

Police said the woman's partner in the crime was her husband, Kareem Annunziata.

Detectives showed Regan three commercial-grade credit card scanners that embed numbers on a magnetic strip that were seized from the couple's apartment last week.

"These, you can actually put the information in and change information on the card," Detective Mike Bailey told Regan.

The device has the same capability for hundreds of blank credit cards and gift cards –  many of which had the name of the former server's husband stamped on them, Regan learned.

"He was taking the cards, putting them on the embosser, putting the numbers and his name at the bottom," officials said.

Channel 2 Action News found that police are investigating thousands of dollars in credit card fraud. They have reached out to retailers where cards were used to buy merchandise.

Meanwhile, the couple faces multiple counts of fraud and police said they expect the number of victims to grow as their investigation resumes.

"There are probably 40 to 50 cases out there," Rose said.

Taco Mac declined to comment on the credit card-skimming case.
