Police: Sleeping driver hits officer

GRAYSON, Ga. —

Gwinnett County police said a sleeping driver struck an officer Friday morning.

The head-on collision happened during the morning rush-hour on State Route 20 at Bracken Trace in Grayson. Police said the officer was in a left turn lane, heading toward an elementary school on a routine patrol, when he was struck.

Police said the second driver struck the center median and hit a divided highway sign before hitting the police car. He was charged with failure to maintain lane.

Both drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening juries but are expected to be OK.

Police said alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
