DECATUR, Ga. —

Investigators remain at the scene in Decatur Friday night after officers opened fire on a man, killing him.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m. on Wilkins Way.

Police shot the suspect inside a patrol car. Witnesses told Channel 2’s Shae Rozzi that the man may have tried to steal the patrol car when he was shot.

The driver side window of the officers’ patrol car was shot out during the incident.

That's where two officers shot at a suspect who later died.

"He got in the front, the driver side," Capt. C. Yarbro with the DeKalb Police Department said.

The man may have been trying to steal that patrol car after trying to steal other cars in the neighborhood off Truitt Lane.

"He just came to me and was like keys, keys and I don't have any keys," witness Stephanie Thomas said.

Thomas was visiting family for Thanksgiving and was outside watching over several children playing in the yard, when she said the man approached her.

Minutes later, Thomas said she heard police.

"We heard, ‘Sir, please put the knife down,’ and we're like ‘Hey get inside, get inside guys.’ They repeated it one more time then we heard two Tasers. Before you know it, right after they Tased him, we heard four shots," Thomas said.

"The suspect failed to drop his weapon, the officers Tased him and when that failed the suspect was subsequently shot," Yarbro said.

Police said the suspect died at a local hospital. They said they are not releasing his name just yet.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure while the investigation is under way.
