COBB COUNTY, Ga. —
Marietta police are alerting residents of a scheme involving a man pretending to be disabled.
“These suspects are actually very good at what they do. They really know how to play on the emotions of their victims,” Marietta police spokesman David Baldwin told Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt.
Police said the scheme, which has been unfolding along Cobb Parkway, has recurred in phases over time.
Baldwin said a man in his 50s claiming to be mentally challenged is asking good Samaritans to hold on to a wad of cash while he takes care of a pressing the problem. The man gives his victims a handkerchief to place the money in, along with their own money.
“Out of nowhere, a second suspect, who seems to be a concerned citizen, shows up and diverts the attention of the victim. The first suspect makes a swap and gives another handkerchief to the victim, which actually has paper in it,” Baldwin said.
Police believe the suspects know their victims have money because they watch them withdraw from nearby ATMS. Police believe they made their latest getaway in a black Cadillac.
“They’re really getting unsuspecting people who really want to do the right thing,” Baldwin said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Marietta police at 770-794-5300.
