GRIFFIN, Ga. —
An incident that began with a 911 call about a man waving a gun outside his home ended with an officer and the suspected gunman shot in Spalding County. It happened along Circus Street in Griffin late Wednesday night.Agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were at the shooting scene Thursday morning, trying to figure out what provoked a man to shoot at police.Someone called police to report a man waving a gun outside his home. When the first officer arrived, the man was in the front yard, police said.“And when he saw the person, he took off running from the scene and the officer gave chase,” Capt. Dwayne Jones of the Griffin Police Department said.Police said the man hid behind a tree, and when a backup officer drove up to help, the man opened fire on the squad car.“A gunshot round went through the windshield of his patrol vehicle and struck him around the right side of his face, we think,” Jones said. The first officer shot back, hitting the gunman several times, police said.“I just feel so sad about this. If I had just talked to him and just been with him, this never would’ve happened,” neighbor Dianne Green said.Medics flew the injured officer to Grady Memorial Hospital. The suspect was flown to Atlanta Medical Center. The conditions of both men have not been released.
