DEKALB COUNTY, Ga —

Officers said a man was found dead several hours after a standoff where he barricaded himself in a condo.

DeKalb police said they are still trying to determine whether the gunman, who they found just before 11 a.m., died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or a gunshot wound from police, who fired at the man.  But Channel 2 Action News has learned that the incident is being investigated as a police-involved shooting.

Channel 2's Sophia Choi was out at the scene at Regal Path Lane, where DeKalb policesaid they tried to contact the man on the phone and on the bullhorn.

Crime scene investigators joined officers, who arrived at a residence at  approximately 5 a.m. Saturday in response to a troubling call made by the man.

That's when the man, who neighbors said is in his 20s  and has a history of mental issues, came to the door with a long-barreled gun and wearing a bullet-proof vest, police told Choi.

The man's actionsprompted police to retreat, said DeKalb Police Maj. Lionel Higdon.

"He went back inside and outside several times, and that's when officers fired upon the subject," Higdon said.

Higdon said the suspect went back inside of the home after police attempted to shoot him.  Police are not sure whether they hit him.  An officer has been placed on administrative leave pending further notice.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Neighbors were evacuated from the community for their safety, police said.
