Police: Loaded gun brought on DeKalb school bus

LITHONIA, Ga. —

Parents and students are on edge after police said a teen was carrying a loaded gun on a Lithonia school bus.

Police arrested a 15-year-old Miller Grove High School student after finding the gun last week. According to a police report, fellow students alerted authorities.

“It makes me fear for my life, really," a student at the school told Channel 2’s Ashley Swann.

The report said witnesses alerted school police that a student had a gun on a bus the morning of Oct. 4. When school police tracked the student down, they said they found a Jennings .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun loaded with seven bullets in the accused student's backpack.

The teen was charged with possession of a handgun on school grounds and taken to juvenile detention.

“These are awful stories that we wish didn't happen. I can only say the school system responded by charging the student and turning him over to the proper authorities,” DeKalb Schools spokesman Jeff Dickerson said in a statement.

Miller Grove’s PTA president also said the school handled the situation appropriately.

The incident marks two reported weapon confiscations involving DeKalb School students within a week of each other. On Wednesday, police said they found a Salem Middle School student in possession of a BB gun.
