After ending 2012 with a substantial rainfall deficit, Atlanta got 2013 under way on a soggy note.

Light rain began to fall in Atlanta at about 8 a.m. and will continue for much of New Year’s Day.

“There’ll be no severe weather, no thunderstorms, just some rain that will be rolling in … across metro Atlanta,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley said.

Atlanta ended 2012 with 37.03 inches of rain, a deficit for the year of just over 12.5 inches.

Temperatures should climb into the mid-50s on New Year’s Day. Wednesday morning’s lows will be in the low 40s, with highs again in the mid-50s.

Chandley’s extended forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of rain, highs in the low 50s and lows around 40 on Thursday, then mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s on Friday.
