Neighbor wants more police to patrol park

ATLANTA —

A frustrated southeast Atlanta resident is demanding more police patrol his neighborhood park.

J.P. Michalik told Channel 2's Erica Byfield he thought a $2 million overhaul of Selena S. Butler Park would keep the drug dealers away, but that has not happened.

"It's definitely frustrating because of the potential it could be a very nice community park," he said.

Michalik said it's become kind of a sport to search the grass and track where the drug dealers have been.

"That's a drug baggie," Michalik said as he picked up a small green bag.

He's lived near Butler Park for five years.

Michalik told Byfield when he moved to the area, there was a problem with drug dealers.

In 2008, a tornado destroyed the park and then the city spent nearly $2 million to fix it up. Butler Park reopened in 2011, but Michalik said sadly, nothing's changed.

"I was out here last Sunday and I saw one guy buying drugs from another guy ... you have seniors who live across the street they are scared to come over here," Michalik said.

Roscoe Hudson told Byfield he agreed.

Hudson lives in a nearby senior complex and said a drug dealer threatened him last week.

"They had something for us if we keep calling the cops ... they feel like the park is theirs," Hudson said.

Atlanta police told Byfield they are cracking down on crime in this area and point out in a six-week span from May to July they arrested 14 different people at Butler Park for drug and alcohol related offenses.

Byfield also learned officers patrol the park on bike and undercover.

Byfield met Al Arnold playing basketball in the park. He told her he has not noticed any issues.

"There is nothing bad going on out here," he said.

Michalik would also like the City of Atlanta to open the recreation center in the park on weekends.
