GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —

A neighbor is being credited with saving the life of a 1-year-old who nearly drowned Sunday night.

The incident happened at the Menlo Creek apartments on Satellite Boulevard in Duluth. Family members told police they were cooking while the boy was at the pool. Andrea Reed said she was nearby when she saw a girl carrying him out.

“Maybe an 11- or 12-year-old girl picked the baby out of the water,” Reed told Channel 2 Action News. “I was hysterical, and I did everything I could do.”

The boy wasn’t breathing, so Reed performed CPR.

“It was about eight minutes that I did CPR. The father was giving air while I was pressing on the chest,” Reed said.

She said neighbors were yelling, telling her not to give up. Minutes later, the boy started breathing again.

“The baby was gasping for air. At that point, the ambulance came,” Reed said.

Paramedics rushed him to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.
