DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —
A 19-year-old who allegedly shot an Atlanta police officer had his first hearing Monday morning.
Cameron Maddox is being held at the DeKalb County jail on a $600,000 bond.
The judge's ruling comes after Cameron was arrested Friday night for allegedly shooting Atlanta police officer Dexter Toomer the evening before in DeKalb's Little Five Points neighborhood.
Maddox is suspected of hiding on the roof of a restaurant across the street from the Zesto diner on Moreland Avenue and firing at Toomer from approximately 70 feet. Toomer was shot in the leg and is recovering at home. No one else was hurt, but four civilians were in the line of fire, which resulted in Maddox receiving five counts of aggravated assault.
An Atlanta police investigator swore to a judge that Maddox used a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun to shoot Toomer, but Maddox seemed confused about the weapon at his first court appearance Monday.
“What is a Tauraus .40-caliber handgun? That's the same weapon that was used in the assaulting the police officer? It's all the same weapon? On these charges?,” inquired Maddox, who was also slow to respond when a deputy needed his signature on an electronic pad.
But witnesses said they did recall hearing several shots just after 10:30 on the night of the sniper-style shooting.
"I think I heard seven, six or seven, just pop-pop-pop-pop. It wasn't just a couple. It was a lot," one witness told Channel 2's Tony Thomas.
Channel 2 Action News later learned that Maddox attended Oglethorpe University.
Oglethorpe officials released a statement Monday, in part, saying: "The student in question is no longer enrolled in classes or a resident of the campus. We are cooperating fully with the Atlanta Police Department in their investigation."
