Police say an unlicensed 16-year-old driver was behind the wheel of a car that crashed, killing another 16-year-old.

Makeba Sancho turned 16 two weeks ago. She was riding home from Stone Mountain High School with a friend last week when police say the driver turned in front of another car on North Hairston Road, causing a crash.

Makeba’s mother, Penny Jones, said her daughter had to be cut out of the car and she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Jones said she did not have life insurance on her daughter and struggled to pay for her final expenses. Now she has hired an attorney because she said she wants someone to be held accountable, not just financially, but morally.

Police said Makeba’s friend has been charged with driving without a license and second-degree vehicular homicide.

“Sometimes parents need to take responsibility for some of the actions. You don’t let a minor drive cars without a license,” Jones said.

Jones said Makeba was going places. She had a 3.7 GPA and sang in the school choir.

Jones said she has not heard from the driver or her parents.

“Somebody needs to be held accountable for what happened,” Jones said.

The father of the driver declined to comment when contacted by Channel 2’s Eric Philips.
