ATLANTA —

A man accused of stabbing another man outside the Georgia Dome after the NFC Championship game is facing felony aggravated assault charges, his attorney says.

Late last month, Channel 2 aired footage of the altercation between James McCoy and another man. McCoy said he stabbed the man in self-defense after he was attacked by a group of people after the Falcons vs. 49ers game on Jan. 20.

McCoy was not charged at the time, but Thursday night, turned himself in at the Fulton County Jail after learning he had two outstanding felony warrants, his attorney, Mac Pilgrim said..

“The World Congress Police have taken out warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a weapon,” McCoy's attorney, Mac Pilgrim said.

Pilgrim told Channel 2 his client was being beat senselessly and was only trying to defend himself.

Last month, McCoy admitted to Channel 2 that he pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed a man in the throat, but after watching the YouTube video of the fight, Pilgrim said he is baffled over the new charges.

“There’s confusion. We don’t know if McCoy is being singled out here. He was essentially a victim,” Pilgrim said.

Pilgrim said he is even more confused about why McCoy is the only person facing criminal charges.
