Loved ones hold vigil for slain GSU alumnus

MARIETTA, Ga. —

The brother and sister of a recent Georgia State graduate who was slain over the weekend spoke at a candlelight vigil Wednesday night.

Twenty-three-year-old Ayokunle Lumpkin grew up in Marietta, where he graduated from Sprayberry High School in 2006.

"I love my brother, so much," sister Tolu Lumpkin said.

Lumpkin’s friends and loved ones marched in silence to the soccer field at Sprayberry where he played until moving on to GSU.

During the vigil, Lumpkin’s siblings shared memories of their brother.

Lumpkin was gunned down around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on Milton Avenue in southeast Atlanta. Police said he and some friends were going after a driver who had rammed into a friend’s parked car and drove off. The driver opened fire, shooting Lumpkin in the chest, police said.

Loved ones said Lumpkin was trying to protect his friends.

Police said they have not made an arrest, but they are actively investigating.

Funeral arrangements for Lumpkin are still pending.
